Przedstawiciel klasycznego idealizmu subiektywnego, skrajnego nominalizmu i sensualizmu; negował istnienie materii, uważając ją za fikcję filozoficzną; przeczył istnieniu rzeczywistości przedmiotowej, różnej od idei ludzkiego umysłu (immanentyzm), głosił tezę, iż wszelkie przedmioty świata zewnętrznego są jedynie zespołem wrażeń postrzegającego podmiotu (łacińskie esse = percipi — istnieć to tyle, co być postrzeganym); krytyk deizmu i ateizmu, zbudował system metafizyki stanowiący swoistą wersję aposteriorycznego (a posteriori) dowodu na istnienie Boga; najważniejsze prace: Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision (1709), Traktat o zasadach poznania ludzkiego (1710, wydanie polskie 1956), Trzy dialogi między Hylasem a Filonousem (1713, wydanie polskie 1956).
