Tworzył obrazy o tematyce rodzajowej, teatralnej, liczne portrety grupowe (Służba Hogartha) i indywidualne (Autoportret z psem 1745, Sprzedawczyni krewetek 1740–45), swobodnie malowane, odznaczające się świetną charakterystyką modela; podejmował także tematykę religijną i historyczną; zajmował się teorią sztuki (traktat Analysis of Beauty 1753); ilustracje satyryczne, karykatury; największe uznanie zdobyły mu cykle miedziorytów wykonane wg własnych obrazów (Kariera kurtyzany 1732, Kariera marnotrawcy 1735, Modne małżeństwo 1745), w których krytykował odstępstwa od zasad moralności mieszczańskiej; wywarł duży wpływ na malarstwo angielskie XIX w.
