James [dżeimz] William, ur. 11 I 1842, Nowy Jork, zm. 26 VIII 1910, Chocorua (stan New Hampshire), brat Henry?ego, amerykański filozof i psycholog;

jeden z głównych przedstawicieli i popularyzator pragmatyzmu oraz funkcjonalizmu w psychologii. Od 1885 profesor Uniwersytetu Harvarda w Cambridge; jeden z głównych przedstawicieli i popularyzator pragmatyzmu, kładł nacisk na praktyczny charakter poznania, uważając je za instrument służący zaspokajaniu jednostkowych potrzeb; pojmował prawdziwość jako praktyczną przydatność; w psychologii zainicjował funkcjonalizm, traktując psychikę („strumień świadomości”) jako środek przystosowania się do środowiska; wywodził uczucia ze zmian fizjologicznych (teoria Jamesa–Langego); Principles of Psychology (t. 1–2 1890), Psychologia (1892, wydanie polskie 2002), Prawo do wiary (1897, wydanie polskie 1901, wydanie współczesne 1996), Pragmatyzm (1907, wydanie polskie 1911, wydanie współczesne 1998), Filozofia wszechświata (1909, wydanie polskie 1911).
