od 1832 duchowny anglikański, przywódca ruchu oksfordzkiego, dążącego do zbliżenia Kościoła anglikański do katolicyzmu; 1851 przeszedł na katolicyzm, od 1865 arcybiskup Westminsteru, od 1875 kardynał; próbował realizować w Wielkiej Brytanii doktrynę społ. papieża Leona XIII, pośredniczył w konfliktach strajkowych.
