Scott [skot] Sir Walter, ur. 15 VIII 1771, Edynburg, zm. 21 IX 1832, Abbotsford k. Roxburgh, szkocki i angielski poeta oraz powieściopisarz.
W twórczości swej ożywiał baśniowo-rycerską przeszłość Szkocji; poematami Pieśń ostatniego barda (1805, przekład polski 1821), Pani jeziora (1810, przekład polski 1822) i innymi zapoczątkował gatunek powieści poetyckiej, który następnie rozwinął G. Byron. Znaczenie Scotta dla rozwoju romantyzmu w literaturze europejskiej utrwaliła przede wszystkim proza: stworzył powielany przez wiele pokoleń wzór powieści historycznej, łączącej realizm historyczny z fantastyką i tajemniczą nastrojowością legend i wierzeń ludowych. Z dziejami pogranicza szkocko-angielskiego w XVII–XVIII w. wiążą się najwybitniejsze powieści Scotta: Waverley (1814, wydanie polskie 1830), Rob Roy (1818, wydanie polskie 1830), Więzienie w Edynburgu (1817, wydanie polskie 1827), Narzeczona z Lammermooru (1819, wydanie polskie 1828); w późniejszych dominuje tematyka angielska i francuska udziału w wyprawach krzyżowych (Ivanhoe 1819, wydanie polskie 1821); biografie i dzieła historyczne, prace edytorskie.
