Sterne [st?:rn] Laurence, ur. 24 XI 1713, Clonmel (hrab. Tipperary, Irlandia), zm. 18 III 1768, Londyn, angielski powieściopisarz i humorysta, duchowny anglikański.

Wybitny przedstawiciel prozy sentymentalnej (Podróż sentymentalna przez Francję i Włochy 1768, wydanie polskie 1817); pisarz oryginalny i eksperymentujący, w swoim głównym dziele Życie i myśli J.W.

A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, Sterne Laurence

The crimson window-curtains... were drawn close; the sun was setting, and reflected through them so warm a tint into the fair fille de chambre's face, I thought she blush'd-the idea of it made me blush myself. We were quite alone; and that super-induced a second blush before the first could get off. -from "The Temptation" Laurence Sterne's revolutionary novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1760-1767) plays with time, space, narrative conceits, and the very concept of the novel itself-it has dramatically affected the course of English-language ... więcej

Though Tristram is always present as narrator and commentator, the book contains little of his life, only the story of a trip through France and accounts of the four comical mishaps which shaped the course of his life from an early age. Firstly, while still only a homunculus, Tristram's implantation within his mother's womb was disturbed. At the very moment of procreation, his mother asked his father if he had remembered to wind the clock.

A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (Aziloth Books), Sterne Laurence

Laurence Sterne was born into poverty in 18th century Ireland, but managed to study at Cambridge University by working a servitor to other, richer students. His novel/memoir 'A Sentimental Journey' has been variously described as either a classic satire comparable with the works of Cervantes and Rabelais, or a book of utter immorality. Although it purports to be a travelogue, 'A Sentimental Journey' is more concerned with provocative and racy humour, based upon a painstaking examination of the author's own inner dialogue and emotions.
