Tagore Rabindranath, właśc. Rabindranath Thakur, ur. 7 V 1861, Kalkuta, zm. 7 VIII 1941, tamże, syn Debendranatha, indyjski poeta, prozaik, filozof, myśliciel, tworzący w języku bengalskim, także kompozytor i malarz.

Twórczość Tagorego, głęboko humanistyczna, afirmująca pełnię życia, jest związana z indyjską tradycją filozoficzną i literacką, a także bengalską poezją ludową; wywarła wielki wpływ zarówno na literaturę indyjską, jak i europejską początku XX w.; utwory tłumaczone na wiele języków (w Polsce głównie z języka angielskiego), m.in. na angielski przez samego poetę; liczne zbiory poezji, głównie lirycznej, m.in. uhonorowany 1913 Nagrodą Nobla tom Gitańdźali (1910, wydanie polskie Pieśni ofiarne 1913), ponadto Sonar-tari [‘złota łódź’] (1896), Kszanika [‘przemijanie’] (1900), Ogrodnik (1914, wydanie polskie 1915), Księżyc przybierający (1913, wydanie polskie 1916), Podszepty duszy. Tagore prowadził działalność pedagogiczna, 1901 założył w Śantiniketanie (wschodni Bengal) szkołę, którą 1921 rozwinął w Viśva Bharat University (od 1951 uniwersytet państwowy); w praktyce łączył indyjskie i europejskie metody wychowawcze. Tagore jest autorem muzyki do wielu własnych utworów poetyckich; uprawiał rysunek i malarstwo (figuralne kompozycje fantastyczne, głównie tuszami barwnymi).

This vintage book contains Rabindranath Tagore's 1912 play, 'The Post Office'. The play revolves around Amal, a child confined to his adopted uncle's house by an incurable disease who, inspired by the construction of a local post office, fantasizes about receiving a letter from the king or being a postman. The play was translated into English by W. B. Yeats, and was performed in English for the first time in 1912, by the 'Irish Theatre Company' in London with Tagore in attendance.
