He would have had for answer ex actly what was said beyond the Straits of Dover of our own school before the Exhibition of 1855, namely, that there was none. In 1855 the French awoke to the fact that we had at least a number of very remarkable painters by 1867 they had forgot-ten the lesson, and the Show of that year did little to refresh it; but in 1878 their indifference disappeared.
