A man somewhat past middle life, of good presence, known as a sagacious and prudent prince, strictly orthodox yet free from fanaticism, he had a receptive mind and an appreciation of the material advantages of Western civilization. His sons, or the elder among them, had travelled extensively, were of keen intelligence and already known as capable leaders of men.
