Excerpt from Description of Chinese Pottery and Porcelain: Being a Translation of the Tao Shuo; With Introduction, Notes, and Bibliography<br><br>These works indicate the general bent of his mind to be that of a scholar and antiquary, and he often breaks off into a disquisition into the origin of a piece of pottery, or the derivation of a new name, in a way which may prove wearisome to one who is not interested in Chinese philology. Some of the names, like that of the alms bowl (patra), and the water-jar of the Buddhist mendicant, he even traces back to the original Sanscrit.
