In France, the needle deflects to the eaft; and the dial-plate, as figured on the larger map, that of 1612, is conftruéted accordingly. On it the line marked nomom'q/t' reprefents the true north, while the index is carried round to the left, and points out the variation of the needle to the weft. The map is oriented by the needle without reference to its variation, but the true meridian is laid down by a strong line on which the degrees of latitude are numbered.
