Excerpt from Catalogue of the Works of Art Belonging to the City of New York<br><br>In 1804 the Common Council commissioned Colonel Trumbull to paint the portraits of the chief magistrates of this City since the Revolution. This order included Mayors Duane, Varick, and Livingston, and the City continued to have portraits of its Mayors painted down to Mayor Gunther.<br><br>The City has in its collection four portraits of Washington, three of Clay, and four of De Witt Clinton.
