Excerpt from Colonel Edward Buncombe, Fifth North Carolina Continental Regiment: His Life, Military Career, and Death While a Wounded Prisoner in Philadelphia During the War of the Revolution; Address Delivered Before the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati at Its Meeting Held in Hillsborough, July 4, 1901

Joseph Buncombe, a brother of Thomas, and hence an uncle of Edward, lived for a time in North Caro lina and married Ann, a daughter of George Durant; but he is said to have died while absent from the col ony on a visit to relatives. When in North Carolina, his home was in what is now the county of Washing ton (then a part of Tyrrell). Where he owned a valuable estate. He probably died childless, for his property was bequeathed by him to his nephew. The latter, upon viewing the lands in Tyrrell, was so well pleased with them that he disposed of his rest Indian pos sessions and settled permanently in North Carolina about the year 1768. Shortly after this, the mansion known as Buncombe Hall was erected on the site of his uncle's former residence.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
