No se había llegado a conocer la mitad de los países del mundo. Europa, gran parte de Asia y la parte norte de Africa formaban las únicas tierras conocidas. Los mapas existentes entonces eran muy inexactos. No se sabía nada del gran continente de América, ni de Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Cuba y demás Antillas. En América no había, como ahora, habitantes de las razas blanca y negra.
