Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Origin and Early History of Engraving, Upon Copper and in Wood, Vol. 1: With an Account of Engravers and Their Works, From the Invention of Chalcography by Maso Finiguerra, to the Time of Marc' Antonio Raimondi<br><br>It happened that that part of the present Inquiry which treats of early wood-engraving, was finished before Mr. Singer's work was far advanced and at his request, a copy of the book, so far printed, was sent to him for his inspection I have thought it necessary to notice this circumstance, in order to account for the mention of this work in several passages of Mr. Singer's book, which, having been finally completed before my own, has now been many weeks in the hands of the public. Mr. Singer, I find, differs with me in opinion upon several points; but I think, upon the whole, we are less frequently at variance as to facts than consequences.
