Excerpt from Sermons Preached in the Parish Church of St. Andrew, Clifton<br><br>The wisdom of the prudent, says Solomon, is to understand his way.1 And surely our wisdom, if we have common prudence, is to try to ascertain for ourselves what our true state is in God's sight, whether we are in the right path or not, and if we have reason to hope, (a hope, of course, mixed with much fear in the best of us), that by God's grace we are so, to seek diligently and enquire how we may best be preserved in that way. Christian pru dence, or wisdom, the subject on which I am going to make a few remarks, is the art of carrying on the work of salvation with the least risk; of so judging and arranging things and events as to make them all look and tend the right way; of allowing no occasions of good to slip by us without turning them to good; of neglecting no assistance or means of success which God may graciously place within our reach. Now all this necessarily implies a great deal of care and watchfulness on our part. But how few are there who will devote this necessary atten tion to the work! How true that saying of our Lord's, respecting the comparative wisdom of the children of this world and the children of light!
