Excerpt from A Manual of Roman Antiquities<br><br>IN compiling this Treatise, I have endeavoured to present, in a connected form, such information on the Topography of the Roman City, on the rise and gradual development of the Roman Constitution, and on the social and domestic habits and feelings of the Roman People, as may serve to remove some of the obstacles which impede the progress of those who are desirous of applying themselves to the study of Latin Literature. It must be understood, however, that the inquiries here prosecuted do not extend beyond the latter portion of the first century after the birth of Christ.
