The great comic ballet Copp&eacute;lia had dazzled Paris and Emperor Napoleon III mere weeks before war erupted; in retrospect, the ballet&rsquo;s obsession with a mechanical woman anticipated the conflict&rsquo;s mechanized violence.</p>
