As the play opens Othello and Desdemona have eloped. Othello's friend Barbantio thinks Othello used witchcraft to seduce Desdemona. Othello and his bride are forced to go to Cyprus, where Othello leads an army in battle. Betrayal, acquisitions, and murder follow.
