<p>They survived the Great Depression, helped win two world wars, lived</p><p>through the birth of the space age, and witnessed the introduction of</p><p>the internet. The real- life characters eulogized in this book were special not</p><p>because they held prodigious political power or amassed large amounts of</p><p>wealth but precisely because they were ordinary. They walked among us largely</p><p>unknown but helped shaped and define the American character through the</p><p>20th Century.
