Excerpt from Guide to Bankruptcy Files, 1867 1878: U. S. District Court, District of Kansas<br><br>Due to depressed economic conditions following the Civil war, the United States Congress, in l867, passed a federal bankruptcy law. The law had several objectionable features and was finally repealed in l878. During the eleven years the law was in effect, over 600 individuals and corporations filed for bankruptcy in the state of Kansas. The records concerning these bankruptcy cases are part of the records of the u.s. District Court of the District of Kansas, and are available for research at the Federal Archives and Records Center in Kansas City, Missouri.<br><br>The case files are divided into two basic series. The first series, the Bankruptcy Case Files, contain official court documents relating to the cases.
