Much that is excellent has been. Written about him by Taine, Ruskin, and other critics, but no clear analysis of his genius, no thorough and systematic examination of his works, has yet been placed before the public. Mr. Osler's little book is good so far as it goes, but the evolution of Tintoretto as a painter is not in it. At the same time it contains many valuable suggestions, and no other writer has appreciated so well the moral quality of this master' 5 painting.
