Die „germania ist chronologisch betrachtet die dritte Schrift des Cornelius Tacitus und folgte auf den im Jahre 81 n. Chr. Entstandenen Dialogus de oratoribus und die im Jahre 98 erschienene Biographie seines Schwieger vaters, des Feldherrn Agricola. Auch sie gehort nach Kap. 37 dem zweiten Konsulatsjahr des Kaisers Trajanus, also dem Jahre 98 an; in ihm ist sie nicht blofs verfafst, sondern ohne allen Zweifel auch veröffentlicht, da eine auch nur erst 99 heraus gegebene Schrift nicht mehr von alter impemtoris Trazam con sulatus hätte reden dürfen. Es ist von Interesse zu konstatieren, dafs sie der etwa 54 n. Chr.
