<p><em>Voice Lessons</em> is the story of Phoebe Hirsch, an aimless young woman who comes of age in the turbulent nineteen sixties, pursues art, music, and communal life in the seventies, and finally finds her voice as a writer as the eighties begin.</p>

<p>Along the way, she falls in and out of love, discovers the mystical world of the Sufis, learns to be a good mother, and finds the courage to stand up for herself, her child, and her work. Most importantly, she learns how to be herself.</p>
