Railway. This is in accordance with the established cus-v tom. Of the company, which has for quite a number of years taken a Couse paint ing for that purpose. The subjecft this year is The Eagle Dance, and with the. Artistic border in Navajo design, it makes a most attractive calendar. A, description of the Eagle Dance is given as follows; The Eagle Dance is a frag ment of a. Rain and growth ceremony that: was formerly common to all Pueblo towns. It was performed in the late win ter or early spring and likely to be re pealed from time to time during the mer. The eagle, or thunder bird, was supposed to have direct intercourse with. Sky powers and was much venerated by the lndians. The Eagle Dance is a. Dramatization of that supposed relation-v ship. Two young men costumed as eagles are seen in almost every movement that would be possible to these great; birds. You see them in the act of soar~ ing, of hovering over fields, of perching' on high places, resting on the ground, and going through the various mating gestures.
