It is still a working centre, but the picture market has been removed to Berlin. Only in matters of applied art has Munich retained its leading position according to two historians, both writing in the present year of grace, 1900. The predominance of Berlin as capital of the empire is obvious, and will probably continue to extend; Dresden, in emulation of Munich, is striving for a leading position; in Hamburg, Carlsruhe, and Stuttgart, there are art schools imbued with the modern spirit, and a popular art movement that encourages the development of a local art industry. King Ludwig's Golden Age of the Arts is now not even treated with respect. From that period originates the Munich Renaissance architecture, in which style the Southern German Architecture was benumbed for decades. And the people's soul will not explain this direction, because the splendid Hellenic buildings do not by any means agree with the Munich citizen's beer-joviality. It was not the art of the people: it was a whim of the king.
