Zaliczany do gł. nowatorów formy powieściowej i prekursorów XX-wiecznego psychologizmu; od 1876 w Wielkiej Brytanii, u schyłku życia przyjął obywatelstwo bryt.; w twórczości konfrontował kultury amer. i eur., analizując zwłaszcza konflikt mentalności amer., ukształtowanej w tradycji purytańskiego dogmatyzmu, z eur. relatywizmem moralnym; liczne opowiadania (np. Autografy Jeffreya Asperna 1888, wyd. pol. 1979, ponadto wybory pol.
