這是一個發生在文革時代的故事。作品擺脫所謂傷痕文學的演繹模式，用一個八九歲小女孩的眼光、高度和認知，以天真無邪的思維和妙趣橫生的童趣，真實地描寫了那個年代的小孩的生存環境、接受教育的狀況，和在高壓政治下發生的極其扭曲的人和事。這個叫夏小蕾的小女孩，因為很畸形的原因，在不到八歲時被迫離開父母，隨外公在外地生活。這個年齡，正是人生接受教育至關重要的時段，然而在學校、社會、家庭的共同作用下，她不但沒有接受到中華民族優秀的傳統文化教育，反而被灌輸錯誤的生死觀，以及顛倒好壞美醜和是非黑白的價值觀，慢慢學習撒謊、仇恨、報復、出賣，最後甚至被動地捲進了一宗命案，間接參與殺人。故事的取材不少是我的親身經歷，我希望通過真實再現當時的社會狀況，從而引起讀者思考：那個年代成長的一代人，正是當今的所謂社會中堅，時下中國大陸種種令人不安、不解、不合情理的現狀，跟那個時代的教育，究竟有著什麼樣的聯繫？我們又應該怎樣反思歷史文化？一個小孩尚且對當時的醜惡政治作出了貢獻，那麼，有誰能說自己只是一個無辜的受害者呢？ ...
