Schweitzer [szwaic?r] Albert, ur. 14 I 1875, Keysersberg (Górna Alzacja), zm. 4 IX 1965, Lambaréné (obecnie w Gabonie), niemiecki teolog protestancki, biblista, filozof kultury, wirtuoz, lekarz;

od 1899 duchowny ewangelicki; 1902–12 doc. teologii uniwersytetu w Strasburgu; od 1951 członek francuskiej Akademii Nauk Moralnych i Politycznych; 1952 otrzymał Pokojową Nagrodę Nobla. Od 1913 (z przerwami na recitale organowe, gościnne wykłady i podróże, których celem było zdobywanie funduszy na cele charytatywne) przebywał w Lambaréné (Gabon), gdzie założył szpital i prowadził ośrodek misyjny, a od 1950 także wioskę dla trędowatych. Jako lekarz, misjonarz i myśliciel Schweitzer oparł się na etyce Nowego Testamentu, za której fundament uznał pojęcia chrześcijańskiej miłości i poszanowania życia. Jako teolog skoncentrował się na historyczno-krytycznych badaniach osoby Jezusa i jego nauk, dowodząc sprzeczności w protestanckiej teologii liberalnej (przez co przyczynił się do jej upadku). Wywarł silny wpływ na współczesne teorie eschatologii biblijnej, a także na chrześcijański irenizm, ekumenizm i dialog między głównymi religiami świata. Schweitzer był mistrzem gry na organach, konserwatorem instrumentów i znawcą twórczości J.S. Bacha. Główne prace: Die Religionsphilosophie Kants (1899), Geschichte der Leben — Jesu — Forschung (1906), Jan Sebastian Bach (1908, wydanie polskie 1972), Geschichte der Paulinischen Forschung (1911), Wśród czarnych na równiku (1921, wydanie polskie 1934), Kultur und Ethik (1923), Das Christentum und die Weltreligionen (1924), Die Mystik des Apostels Paulus (1930), Z mojego życia... (1931, wydanie polskie 1981)Goethe... (1949); w języku polskim: wybór pism Życie (1964) oraz Schweitzer (1976).
