Zaliczany do gł. nowatorów formy powieściowej i prekursorów XX-wiecznego psychologizmu; od 1876 w Wielkiej Brytanii, u schyłku życia przyjął obywatelstwo bryt.; w twórczości konfrontował kultury amer. i eur., analizując zwłaszcza konflikt mentalności amer., ukształtowanej w tradycji purytańskiego dogmatyzmu, z eur. relatywizmem moralnym; liczne opowiadania (np. Autografy Jeffreya Asperna 1888, wyd. pol. 1979, ponadto wybory pol. Łgarz 1974, Drzewo wiadomości 1977) i powieści: Amerykanin (1877, wyd. pol. 1879), Europejczycy (1878, wyd. pol. 1992) Daisy Miller (1879, wyd. pol. 1961), Dom na Placu Waszyngtona (1881, wyd. pol. 1974), Księżniczka Casamassima (1886, wyd. pol. 1991), The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Golden Bowl (1902), Ambasadorowie (1903, wyd. pol. 1960); interesował się psychologią procesu twórczego (nowela Madonna przyszłości 1879, wyd. pol. 1962; powieść Portret damy 1881, wyd. pol. 1977), był wybitnym krytykiem i teoretykiem prozy powieściowej (The Art of Fiction 1884); ponadto powieść niesamowita W kleszczach lęku (1898, wyd. pol. 1959), szkice z podróży, wspomnienia; utwory Jamesa były wielokrotnie ekranizowane (m.in. przez J. Ivory’ego, J. Campion, A. Holland).
