pierwszy profesor historii sztuki uniwersytetu w Oksfordzie (1870–78 i 1883–84); wielbiciel gotyku, wyznawca irracjonalistycznego estetyzmu, głosił utopijne projekty reformy stosunków społecznych przez wychowanie w kulcie piękna; krytykował poglądy J.S. Milla i gospodarkę wolnorynkową; podkreślał związek rzemiosła ze sztuką. Bronił teorii i twórczości prerafaelitów, a także W. Turnera.
